The NYC Insider's guide to the NYC running is inspired by the thoughts and experiences of a New Yorker who has run the NYC Marathon twice and is now training for 5 Half Marathons - one in each of the five boroughs.

Aches and Pains
Oh did I ache today. And so I struggled to even run 3 miles. But I did it!
Sunday:
Breakfast: oatmeal w/dried fruit and sliced almonds, 2 1/2 cups coffee w/half and half Lunch: more coffee and a blueberry muffin Snack: crackers w/butter, oj Dinner: pasta w/chicken, mushrooms, diced tomatoes, & olives; green apple slices; water
Today's mileage: ran 3 miles Year-to-date: 34.5 miles
We've been away on vacation and so my running has suffered. Got back out there today and logged six miles. Now I'm paying the price -- I can really feel how sore my muscles are in my legs and behind all ready -- so tomorrow will be really tough!
Saturday: Breakfast: oatmeal w/dried fruit and sliced almonds, 2 1/2 cups coffee w/half and half Lunch: peanut butter and pumpkin butter sandwich, oj Snack: green apple, water Dinner: steak, roasted potatoes, green beans, orange slices, water Snack: 1/4 cup pecans
Today's mileage: ran 6 miles Year-to-date: 31.5 miles
I had planned to go running with my younger son today, but he wimped out and I was enjoying lounging on the couch with the Sunday Times, so without that motivation, I didn't make it out the door.
Sunday:
Breakfast: 1 cup Life cereal w/milk, 1/2 glass oj Lunch: grilled cheese sandwich, tall skim lite whip mocha Snack: muffin, water Dinner: spaghetti w/meatballs and marinara sauce, sauteed zucchini, water, 2 chocolates
Today's mileage: ran 0 miles Year-to-date: 25 miles
Six at last! Six at last! Thank God Almighty, I finally ran six at last!
It has been a long time since I completed the full loop in Central Park, so it felt great to make it all the way around today. I was slow, certainly, and people were passing me left and right (lots of people out enjoying the relatively mild temps today, even though it was snowing when I started). But I did it and look forward to continuing to ramp up my mileage in the weeks to come.
Saturday:
Breakfast: La Liberte yogurt, honeydew melon, 1 1/2 cups coffee w/half and half Lunch: ham and cheese sandwich w/good and evil pickles, vitamin water lemonade Snack: 1/4 cup trail mix, water Dinner: 1 caipirinha, 1/2 order shrimp appetizer, 1/2 order provolone/tomato appetizer, green salad, marinated steak, a few fries, 2 glasses red wine, chocolate martini
Today's mileage: ran 6 miles Year-to-date: 25 miles
I headed back out into the cold this morning, this time to Central Park, where I love to run, but haven't been in a while. I was pleased to see that I had lots of good company -- unlike yesterday when I only saw one other runner the whole time I was out!
Thursday: Breakfast: La Liberte yogurt, 1/4 cup trail mix Snack: grande skim mocha Lunch: leftover pasta w/shrimp, water Dinner: 1 slice of eggplant pizza, water snack: green tea
Today's mileage: ran 4 miles (and walked 2 miles) Year-to-date: 19 miles
Boy is it cold today! The temp when I got up was 15 F, but the real feel was more like 3 F. Still, it has been ages since I've run and if I'm going to both run the marathon in November and log 1,000 miles this year, I've got to get out there. So I did!
Wednesday: Breakfast: La Liberte yogurt Snack: hot moca w/milk, 1/4 cup trail mix Lunch: baked beans, water Dinner: pasta w/shrimp and a sundried tomato cream sauce, roasted asparagus, water
Today's mileage: ran 3 miles Year-to-date: 15 miles
