The NYC Insider's guide to the NYC running is inspired by the thoughts and experiences of a New Yorker who has run the NYC Marathon twice and is now training for 5 Half Marathons - one in each of the five boroughs.

Race Day is on its Way
My first NYRR race of the year is on Sunday. It's short, only 4 miles, which is good because I haven't been training at levels much above that recently. I'm looking forward to getting back into it and scoring a good (for me) time. It's fairly early in the morning, which I like, and I think the weather will still be fairly cool, which is also good for me. We'll be running terrain I know, in my favorite direction (so we get a nice downward slope for a good portion of the race). Should be lots of fun!
I had planned to go for my run early in the day because rain is predicted for the afternoon. But alas, I am tending to a sick child, so my run will have to wait until another family member is home to relieve me. Now if only the weather can hold off, too....
Didn't go running today (went yesterday; plan to go tomorrow and Friday), and so did a work out with Gilad on Fit TV. Amazingly, my legs are more tired than if I had hit the track!
I was delighted to bump into a friend who was out for a run in the park today at the same time I was. I've generally been a solitary runner, but am thinking of asking about her interest in being running buddies. Knowing someone is waiting for me will certainly serve as an incentive to get out the door, and experience shows that running with a friend makes the miles fly by.
This is my favorite time of year to go for a run. Every new day seems to bring a new batch of blooms and all of nature seems optimistic and fresh. Temps were in the 60's - perfect for capris and a T - and the sky was cloudless and blue. I'm working up slowly to the mileage I was doing last fall, since I want more miles under my belt for my next marathon and so want to build a base of steady, long runs.
This year's NYC marathon, scheduled for November 1, 2009, marks its 40th year. There is sure to be plenty of hoopla surrounding the 40th running celebration, perhaps making this year a good year to participate. The deadline for joining the lottery is June 1 - I'm still on the fence about it and planning my 9 runs (having already done my volunteer duty) to make sure that if I don't do it this year, I can definitely be part of the fun next year.
