The NYC Insider's guide to the NYC running is inspired by the thoughts and experiences of a New Yorker who has run the NYC Marathon twice and is now training for 5 Half Marathons - one in each of the five boroughs.

A Reprieve
I feel lucky today. All along, I had been thinking that today was June 1st and that if I wanted to finish 100 miles by the end of May, I had to do it yesterday. And yesterday morning I just couldn't get out of bed early enough to log the miles I needed (and the rest of the day was fully booked). So what a delight to get up this morning and realize that I COULD meet my goal!
Sunday
Breakfast: muffin, coffee w/half and half
Lunch: hot dog in roll w/ketchup, potato salad, 2 fig newtons, water
Snack: bugles, flavored sparkling water
Dinner: steak, crescent rolls, caesar salad, red wine, amaretto
Sunday's mileage: 5 miles

Year-to-date: 196 miles
Today

Lunch: chicken and pasta, dried cantaloupe, wheat thins, water
Snack: coffee w/half and half

All kinds of things -- sick children, weather, house guests, and sheer laziness have kept me from running lately. But today is beautiful and the forecast is sunny...

Lunch: yogurt w/sliced almonds, 1 cup cheerios
Snack: muffin, water

For a while I was worried that I wouldn't be running the NYC Marathon this year. Apparently there was some confusion about receiving my paperwork postponing my guaranteed entry from last year. But all seems to have worked out, so now I'm back to planning on being in the race. (And as always, a little behind on my miles!)
Throughout my son's doubleheader in Central Park yesterday I found myself asking folks to stay off the ball field. The games were on the fields on the Great Lawn, which many people use as a picnic area and playground, despite the 6 overlapping baseball diamonds which, when the lawn is open, are almost always in use on the weekends. I think everyone believes that they have a right to be there -- it is public property after all -- and they do, to some extent. But they also need to respect, for safety reasons and for common courtesy, that the kids have a game going on.
So I suppose it was a bit mean of me not to similarly respect a photo shoot along the East River Promenade today -- I ran right through their shot instead of waiting or taking a detour.
