The NYC Insider's guide to the NYC running is inspired by the thoughts and experiences of a New Yorker who has run the NYC Marathon twice and is now training for 5 Half Marathons - one in each of the five boroughs.

I'm just planning a short (maybe 3 mile) run today since I'm still a little sore from Friday's big 10-miler. But despire weather predictions for showers, the warm sunny day makes it too nice to stay in!

Running by the East River today, I noticed something I had never seen before. Most of this path features wrought-iron railings to keep pedestrians from plunging into the river. Just north of Gracie Mansion, there is an area where the railings have a wind-mill motif (a reference to NYC's Dutch history?). I've probably passed by them close to a hundred times, but never once before noticed this fancy detail until today. (Just one of the many reasons I prefer running outside!)
Breakfast: yogurt w/sunflower seeds, 2 1/2 cups coffee w/half and half Lunch: toasted cheese sandwich, pineapple chunks, 8 oz juice Snack: chocolate chip muffin, big spoonful peanut butter, water Dinner: scrambled eggs, 2 pancakes w/syrup, fresh fruit, cheesecake, water
Today's mileage: ran 4.5 miles Month-to-date: 44 miles Year-to-date: 144.5 miles
I never knew Grete Waitz personally - the closest I ever got to her was standing in the running corals at her annual "Grete's Gallop" and hearing her cheer the crowd just before the gun went off. But even to an amateur like myself, it was just enough to know that she continued to be interested in inspiring runners with her amazing records (I'm still in wonder that she set her first marathon speed record after only ever having run 13 miles at a time), her grace, and her dedication to the sport.
Breakfast: yogurt w/sunflower seeds Lunch: salad w/baked salmon, 2 small candy bars, water Snack: 2 1/2 cups coffee w/half and half, "tasting" as I made cheesecake Dinner: chicken/cheddar/guacamole quesadilla, 3/4 avocado, water, sliver of cheesecake

So nice to see the sun today - makes it a good day for a run! And even though the temperature was only 45 degrees when I left home, the sun made it feel warm enough that I soon shed my hoodie and ran in my tshirt.

I need to run more often to make sure I get the miles in this week. The weather forecast for the week isn't pretty - but I've proven to myself that I don't melt in the rain!
