Not Much Running Lately
Two years ago, I remember falling into a running slump right around this time of year. There didn't seem to be much of a reason for it; I just didn't have much get up and go. Have been experiencing the same thing lately. But the marathon looms, so I must start getting my miles in.
I've blogged before about how much I enjoy regular runs with a good friend - even if we don't run far or fast together - because her company is sure to encourage me to get out and run, even on the coldest days this past winter. I have always known that I'm not alone in valuing her encouragement. And so I can't say I was surprised by the recent Wall Street Journalarticle that a reminder phone call - even a robotic one - boosts people's resolve to work out. Maybe this is all it takes to get America moving!
I didn't notice that my ipod was badly in need of a charge until I actually got to the running track today. So, with a heavy heart, I started off without music. I decided to do a short run (1.5 miles) but run at as fast a pace as possible. Doing so made me realize how slowly I usually run - so perhaps I'll try doing this (and keep up with the interval training) more often.
I first encountered fartlek training at a session with MAAM some years ago. I've largely neglected this type of interval training in the time since. But on Sunday, my running partner and I talked about recent research that shows that this type of speed work can be more useful for burning calories that running at a steady pace, and so gave it a try. I could really feel the difference!
